Well, it’s official – I beat Atomfall. Like I speculated in my last Atomfall post, there are multiple endings! So which did I go with? I’ll tell you, but let’s talk more about the game first. Slight spoilers? I’ll give you a warning if you’re creeping up on one so you’ll be prepared, unlike this guy.
First of all, the stress I felt while playing this game never relented to the point that there are areas I never stepped foot in. Every story you can potentially follow leads to you escaping, but how you do is based off who you go along with. Many of the stories overlap and go into the same areas but for different purposes. See, there’s this place called The Interchange you need to access and there’s multiple entry points across the different maps. Some are easy to walk into; others you might need to fight or sneak your way into depending on what decisions you’ve made. There’s various wings that need power. Connect a battery and you restore access to parts of The Interchange. Doors can be unlocked, lights come on. Every time I powered up a wing, the dramatic sounds made me anxious and I’d look frantically around to make sure I was alone.
You might encounter some slight resistance getting into these areas. There are ferals in some areas and yes I used my stupid photo mode cheat. All of these data stores are ultimately connected, but since there is no power, you have to find the different entrances to access all of the wings. One of the first ones I found was the only one that was covered in spores or whatever this infection was. I walked in and started getting melted so I tried a different tactic. Could I take some tonic and race against the clock? Would I die on my way out? I saved the game and gave it a shot…
Success! Guess we got some ventilation in there! As you can imagine, this location was painful.
Anyway, last time I wrote about Atomfall, I hadn’t even ventured to this area called Skethemoor. There’s big robots and wandering people who are ready to take you down at a moment’s notice. There’s a big prison too where, surprise, an Interchange entrance is hidden! But ya know, behind big turrets, robots with fire and machine guns and lots of soldiers. Under normal circumstances, this would be a huge problem, but it was actually super easy, barely an inconvenience (oh really?) because I lied to a commander and said I was gonna do something for him. The funniest part of that area was inadvertently releasing prisoners who started running around attacking guards while I just wandered around looking for stuff to loot.

All paths largely cross through the same locations but for different purposes. Remember that medical wing I mentioned in my last post? I never went back, but I know of at least two other things that occur in that area that would progress other quests. I want to go back; I even tried to play more after I beat the game, but I kept getting anxious and stopped when all my quests brought me to one of two places…

I watched my husband go into the medical wing and there’s a few thrall. That’s probably manageable, but even though they are slow creeps, I still don’t want them near me. I haven’t even seen the robotics wing, but I know there are big ass robots and they will take a lot of bullets before they go down. Apparently you can upgrade your weapons to a better condition making them more effective, but I never learned how to do that. My husband is walking around with pristine versions of all his weapons while I’m accidentally killing things because I’m trying to run past scary tunnels and set off explosions.
Anyway, as you’re playing through the story and watching these storylines play out, one thing is apparent. I don’t think anyone in this weird world is trustworthy. I’d start going down a path and then someone would say something weird and I’d be like, eh, never mind, and go find someone else to follow for a bit. Everyone ultimately wants me to do some variation of the same thing. Power up The Interchange, access “Oberon,” and they’ll help me escape…

So wanna know who I followed? The voice that kept calling me on the phone. Why? Because it didn’t make me go into the medical wing or robotics wing LOL. I wish I was joking. But every other story had me going into one of those two places and I was scared. I knew that voice was acting sus and the further I got into the story, the more obvious it was that something was off… or was it? MYSTERY! At this point, I was ready to beat the game and I did not like these creepy bastards. This is where things are going to become more spoilery so if you don’t wanna know a thing, maybe stop here.

So, what was kind of fun about this is as I was progressing the story, I made the big *DECISION* and as I was making my escape, another character I could have followed showed up and was pissed at me for what I did. So, I blasted her and her friends and made a run for it. As I ran back to where it all began, chaos was erupting in the village and all around me. Druids infiltrated the town and were attacking people. Instead of getting involved, I just kept running. I had to get back to the beginning.

Every story ends with you making an escape. And as I’m running back to the beginning, I’ve got more tools at my disposal and I’m accessing areas I’ve never been… Finding notes that say more about this voice. Other people have been receiving the calls as well. Was it a scientist playing a prank? Someone thought so. But in another note I found, that scientist was dead and the calls were still coming… That’s when you know something definitely isn’t right.

The ending though. The ending felt cinematic. As I’m creeping back through these hallways, sneaking back into the bunker, back to the room I first woke up in, I knew this was not gonna go well. Everything I’ve found is telling me this voice is not good news. I found a note where someone said no one else heard the ringing except for them… And then you hear that phone ringing and you have to decide… are you going to answer?
After all is said and done, I really like this game! I am such a chicken, but I really enjoyed my time in it. I did go back and try to progress other quests from a previous save file, but I don’t think my heart can take it right now. I know; I’m such a baby. It is manageable, but I am an unreasonable person.
I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a mysterious game with some elements of survival and some options to really “choose your own adventure.” You can make the game last a long time or proceed as quickly as possible through the areas. There’s a lot to explore, fun little back drops and setups to find. I definitely think this is one worth checking out.

So, did you play Atomfall? Who did you ultimately side with? Let me know in the comments!
